Bypass surgery also called as Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) is the most common surgery done for human heart when it is unable to receive the right amount of blood that it should receive secondary to multiple severe blockages. This situation may arise due to clogging of its arteries. To treat this condition, a new path is created to allow blood to flow as smoothly and naturally as possible. It is done under general anesthesia.
A surgeon removes a blood vessel, called a graft, from another part of patient’s body, like chest, leg, or arm. He attaches one end of it to the aorta, a large artery that comes out of the heart. Then, he attaches the other end to an artery of the heart below the blockage thereby making a new channel bypassing the blocked segment of artery of heart. If there are multiple blockages, then the surgeon may do one or more bypass procedures during the same surgery.
