In Vitro Fertilization - (OB27)| IVF Cost in Pune and other Cities in India
In vitro fertilization (IVF) or assisted reproductive technology (ART) or test tube baby is a medical procedure in which an egg from a female body and sperm from a male body are merged artificially in a laboratory environment. This treatment stands as one of the most effective solutions for complex infertility cases either due to male factors like low sperm count ,primary male infertility and female factors like advanced age, blocked fallopian tubes,PCOD,endometriosis or unexplained infertility.
Couples who opt for IVF procedure can have their own eggs and sperms for the procedure. However, many a time, they may even require egg or/and sperm donors, according to their health or fertility status. These are basic steps of IVF.
- 1. Stimulation: Fertility drugs are given to women to boost egg production monitored by transvaginal ultrasound.
- 2. Egg retrieval: Under ultrasound image guidance , a thin needle is inserted through the vagina and into the ovary and sacs (follicles) containing the eggs. The needle is connected to a suction device, which pulls the eggs and fluid out of each follicle, one at a time. The procedure is repeated for the other ovary. Rarely a pelvic laparoscopy may be needed to remove the eggs. If a woman does not or cannot produce any eggs, donated eggs may be used.
- 3. Insemination and Fertilization: It is the mixing of sperm and egg in environmentally controlled chamber that mostly succeeds within few hours, however if the doctor thinks that chances of fertilization are low then the sperm can be manually injected inside the egg by ICSI(Intracytoplasmic sperm injection).
- 4. Embryo culture: the fertilized egg divides to becomes an embryo. Within about 5 days, a normal embryo has several cells that are actively dividing. Couples who have a high risk of passing a genetic (hereditary) disorder to a child may consider pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). The procedure is done about 3 to 4 days after fertilization. Laboratory scientists remove a single cell from each embryo and screen the material for specific genetic disorders.
- 5. Embryo transfer: Embryos are placed into the woman's womb 3 to 5 days after egg retrieval and fertilization. The doctor inserts a thin tube (catheter) containing the embryos into the woman's vagina, through the cervix, and up into the womb. If an embryo sticks to (implants) in the lining of the womb and grows, pregnancy results. More than one embryo may be placed into the womb at the same time, which can lead to twins, triplets, or more. The exact number of embryos transferred is a complex issue that depends on many factors, especially the woman's age. Unused embryos may be frozen and implanted or donated at a later date.
